Unleash the Power of the Modern Press Release

Remember the days when a press release was simply a tool the public relations professional used to get information out to journalists?

Yes, they are still used to increase a companies visibility by announcing important news, but the audience has grown. Today the goal is to not only reach  journalist, but grab the attention of the consumer too.

Marketing professionals have also jumped on board, as they have found strong search engine optimization (SEO) value to the press release. This has attracted the small businesses, who can now use a press release as a sales tool to reach customers directly, create a backlink, and have their news searchable.

So when writing a press release today, one must define who their target audience is. Here are a few options for you to consider:

  • Traditional Media Outlets
  • Bloggers
  • B2B Customers
  • B2C Customers
  • Investor Relations

Now that you have defined your target audience, it is time to write the release itself. Do not over-complicate the process by worrying about becoming some kind of SEO guru. Simply use the same SEO practices that you use for your blog posts. Perform a little keyword research, and then make sure those keywords targeted are in the title, summery and body of the release.

There is no magic button, but a successful formula is to simply define the goal, know who your target audience is, use basic SEO practices, distribute appropriately, and measure your results.

So how do you measure your results? A report from the Society for New Communication Research shows that the most frequently mentioned criteria for measuring the success of an online press release are the number of times the release has been republished, the number of times a release has been viewed, how many articles get published based on the release, and media interview requests.

For those of you new to this topic, let me finish up this post up by sharing a few places to submit your press releases:

  • PR Newswire – The cost ranges from $199 to $449 per release
  • PRWeb – Cost ranges from $80 to $360 per release
  • PRLog – A free service with a Page Rank of 6 and Alexa traffic rank of 1,831
  • Free Press Release – A free service with a Google Page Rank of 5 and Alexa traffic rank of 1,982

Hope this helps you to Unleash the Power of the Modern Press Release! If so, please feel free to leave a comment below!

LOVE IT!
